David A. Spero has been building furniture for 24 years, the first 14 years as a hobbyist and the last 10 years as a professional.
David began his interest in making furniture while in graduate school in 1976. The transition from hobbyist to professional took several unusual detours. He received a doctoral degree in biomedical sciences in 1981 and served as a faculty member at two medical schools. Later, he founded and ran an environmental testing laboratory for 8 years in Louisville, Kentucky. It was during this time that he developed a passion for early American furniture and began dreaming of becoming a full-time furniture maker in rural Vermont, his boyhood summer home.
After studying with a noted chair maker in Berea, Kentucky, learning from books and spending endless hours constructing every imaginable style of Windsor chair, David decided to turn professional. In 1995, he moved his wife and two girls to Vermont and began building his post and beam house and shop.
Today, David spends much of his time making furniture in a great shop adjacent to his home. He is a juried member of the Guild of Vermont Furnituremakers, a master level group of 20 elite furnituremakers in Vermont. David's work has been displayed in numerous galleries and shows across the country. Also, his chairs were featured in a article in This Old House magazine. When he is not working, you can find him skiing or hiking with his family or just playing with his Border Collie, Kipper. |
