Why choose furniture and Windsor chairs made by David A. Spero?

Each piece is an accurate reproduction of a antique, and is true to style and construction.

Proven Durability

Every piece is guaranteed against defects in the wood and workmanship for a lifetime. If any piece loosens or breaks during normal use, I will replace the whole piece or fix it for FREE! Try getting that guarantee from a factory. I have made over four hundred chairs in the last ten years and I have had only one chair that had a minor problem. That chair was fixed no questions asked.

My chairs are truly handmade in the tradition of 18th century mastercraftsman. The close-up photos are a testimonial to the fine craftsmanship and elegance of my work.

I hand-select every piece of wood that goes into your final piece. A great amount of time is spent selecting only the finest woods from small sawmills in the Northeast. I choose only wood with the finest color and grain pattern.

Whether you choose the authentic milk paint finish or the clear finish which allows grain pattern to show through, I spend a great deal of time on the finishing process. Each piece is either hand-scrapped smooth or sanded though a series ending with 400 grit sandpaper. Only after examining the wood surface for defects or scratches do I apply 6 to 8 coats of a "hand-rubbed" oil/varnish mixture which penetrates deep into the wood. After this process, I "rub-out" the final coat with extra fine steel wool, apply several coats of a paste wax and buff. The end result is a durable, silky smooth finish.

The photo at right is an example of the two-layered milk-paint finish.
